DARCY GRACE JEWELLERY

Hallmarking

Independent reassurance, held in the smallest detail.

What is a hallmark?

Hallmarking is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection. An independent assay office tests the precious-metal content of a piece and applies marks that confirm its stated purity. It gives you a lasting, recognisable way to understand the gold or platinum you are choosing.

A hallmark concerns the precious metal itself. It is separate from the certification or grading of a diamond.

Our hallmark, with Sheffield Assay Office

The examples below bring together our DG sponsor’s mark, the metal’s fineness and the rose of Sheffield Assay Office. Each symbol has a purpose, offering a small but meaningful record of the piece.

The DG sponsor’s mark
Our DG monogram identifies Darcy Grace Jewellery as the sponsor submitting the item for hallmarking.
The fineness mark
A number records the precious-metal content in parts per thousand. 750 means 18ct gold, with 75% pure gold; 950 means platinum with 95% pure platinum. For 9ct gold, the fineness mark is 375.
The Sheffield rose
The rose identifies Sheffield as the assay office where the precious metal was tested and hallmarked.

Our platinum hallmark

950 denotes platinum of 95% purity. The orb is the traditional platinum symbol.

Reading the additional marks

The sponsor’s mark, fineness mark and assay office mark are the three compulsory elements of a UK hallmark. Traditional metal symbols and date letters are optional additions. The letter B in these examples denotes 2026; a date letter records the year of hallmarking.

These illustrations show our 9ct gold, 18ct gold and platinum examples. The fineness and date marks on an individual piece depend on its metal and the year it is hallmarked.
